Not only does he think DPi is “P1 Lite”, but he also thinks nobody watches WEC. He could not have been any more wrong.

Read this, emphasis mine.

“Look at this like it’s P1 Lite,” Angelelli told me. “This is not nearly as expensive as a WEC P1 car. They have hundreds of millions in their budgets—three digit millions— and most of the time they race in front of nobody . This costs single-digit millions, and we’ll race at Daytona, Sebring, Petit Le Mans, Long Beach. Big races.”

He’s on an acid trip, that guy.

First off, DPi is not P1 Lite. Not even close. DPi is more like Branded P2, and while their budgets are admirably small when compared to LMP1, it will still get blown away by the real thing.

Oh, and while yes, there are about 70,000 people who turned up at the Rolex 24 this year (60k to 80k, actually), Le Mans still commands well over 40,000 more spectators, not to mention viewers on the WEC app, something IMSA doesn’t have because they suck FOX Sports’ filthy cock.

Plus, check out the stands at COTA during IMSA’s Lone Star Le Mans.

How many people do you reckon were actually there?

It wasn’t empty like how it seems like. At 100+ degree F heat, people stayed away from the stands (besides the grand stand). It wasn’t F1 or Moto GP, but there was a lot of people.

Here are the official numbers. New record :]

I mean... the crowds at WEC races aren’t exactly nobody... but it seems like it when WEC race weekends only bring in about 30,000-60,000 fans at venues that usually house 100,000 - 200,000.

I don’t think it’s very fair for you to compare Le Mans (a practically standalone event) to the Rolex 24 and call it a day, so I looked into the attendances for the other WEC races. I also tried my best to get some IMSA numbers, but they don’t officially put any out.

WEC

Silverstone

52,000 (race weekend) vs. 150,000 (capacity)

Spa

Kinja'd!!!

56,000 (race weekend) vs 70,000 (capacity)

Nurburgring

Kinja'd!!!

58,000 (race) vs 120,000 (capacity)

Mexico City

Kinja'd!!!

38,000 (race) vs. 100,000 (capacity)

COTA

Kinja'd!!!

“A weekend attendance number was not released, but estimates have put the crowd in similar numbers compared to last year. One source indicated to Sportscar365 there were only 8,500 tickets pre-sold prior to the weekend.”

Fuji

Kinja'd!!!

53,500 (race day) vs. 110,000 (capacity)

Shanghai

Kinja'd!!!

55,000 (race weekend) vs. 200,000 (capacity)

Barhain

Kinja'd!!!

Very few ” (race) vs. 70,000 (capacity)

Meanwhile Sebring had “ over 100,000 " for its weekend, with Bell Isle, Barber, Road America, and the Glen reporting about 80,000-100,000 weekends. It helps that a lot of these get paired with Indycar, but the WEC also gets paired with other series also for weekends. If we’re looking at pure race weekend attendance, just 4-5 IMSA crowds could fill a WEC season minus Le Mans. Plus these crowds are in smaller venues so the whole thing seems more packed.

Finally, I hate Fox Sports as much as you , but I doubt the WEC app is bringing in more viewership than FS1, FS2, and FSgo. Google lists the WEC app has “100,000-500,000" downloads. Doubling that to account for the iPhone, at best you’re looking at a million people who have had the app at some point. About 1 in 5 of those actually paid for the stream , and if you figure half are watching every race, you get about the same numbers that Fox did with their shitty coverage of Petit Le Mans this year ( ~100,000  ). Again, that’s best case with the global app, vs Fox US coverage.
